Chasing a Restless Muse 20 July @ 20h15 Lecture- Recital given by Dr John Purser, composer, poet, musicologist, author of the award winning "Scotland's Music” and recently published biography of Erik Chisholm, Dean of the Faculty of Music, University of Cape Town (1946-1965).
For over an hour, John will travel a fascinating journey through Chisholm’s life and music, wonderfully illustrated with many slides and musical excerpts performed by students and staff from the South African College of Music. This evening is supported by GIPCA and the Chisholm Trust. Tickets: TBC

Peter Klatzow retires this year after teaching at the SACM for 37 years, and to mark the occasion this programme features the premieres of two works by Peter Klatzow, the Six Poems of Arthur Buxton and the 24 Preludes for piano, as well “An Early Afrikaans Songbook”.

The Pick ‘n Pay/Fine Music Radio 101.3 Music Awards (Final round) 30 July at 19h30 Baxter Concert Hall
This concert is arranged by fine Music Radio 101.3
This competition recognises a student in each of two categories, Classical and Jazz, and is open to all students between the ages of 18 and 28. Participants are invited to send in a recording of their work, which is judged. A selection of the recordings is featured on Fine Music Radio 101.3 prior to the public concert where the three finalists in each category compete for the prizes.

This is the seventh Laura Searle Prize for Concerto Playing. SACM Jazz Festival 14 to 16 October at 20h15 in the Chisholm Recital Room
This annual SACM Jazz Festival features the UCT Big Band and other groups from the Jazz Programme. Also featuring Mike Campbell, Andrew Lilley, Mike Rossi, Jason Reolon, Amanda Tiffin with various groups and special guest artists, including German pianist Patrick Bebelaar and students from the Stuttgart Conservatory of Music, Germany.
Lunchtime concert on Thursday 14 October: Jazz Und Elekronik featuring music from their recently-released CD recorded live at the BAXTER with Mike Rossi (woodwinds), Ulrich Suesse (electronics) and Patrick Bebelaar (piano).

An annual voice competition sponsored by the Schock Foundation, in two categories, Best Male Voice and Best Female Voice. The competition is open to full-time students of the SACM who are presently in their second or third year and in good academic standing.

Olive Lieberz – Theron Prize 15 November at 18h00 Chisholm Recital Room
A competition for solo classical piano playing, in honour of the late Olive Lieberz-Theron, to award prize money from the Ultimate Wellness Trust. This competition is open to all piano performance students at the SACM who are intending to pursue a career in piano playing.

South African composers and writers celebrate the South African College of Music’s centenary year with five new 20-minute operas with plots based on Saartjie Baartman, Lucy Lloyd and the Bushmen, xenophobia, the assassination of Chris Hani and Breyten Breytenbach’s prison poetry.
